Lopud 1483 – A Sanctuary in Dubrovnik

When you think of Dubrovnik, it is nearly impossible not to think of medieval structures and sites to visit. Loupud 1483 takes this to a whole new level by being a restored Franciscan monastery of Our Lady of the Cave that dates back to the year 1483, which is engraved next to the entrance door.

Perched on the northern-most tip of Lopud Island, Lopud 1483 has an exclusive view overlooking the small harbour and islands beyond. The 13 original cells have been transformed into five private suites, each with its own bathroom and views to the ocean or the original medicinal gardens. There are several places to dine either al-fresco on the sun deck and casual barbeques, or inside in the hallowed surrounded by a vast art collection.

This property took over 20 years to restore. From a missing roof and a floor that was barely there, Frank Gehry took two decades of conservation dealing with layer after layer of history. Since the original role of the Franciscan monastery was cultural development and education, they decided to revive this function in contemporary form. When they reopened their doors in 2018, the monastery has been adapted to a space that can host conferences, symposia, retreats, and bespoke private events.
