Spotlight on South America

There is something for everyone to discover in South America, whether you’re an adventure junkie, a foodie or a history buff. January - March is the perfect time to visit to enjoy the delicious summer weather, since South America has opposite seasons from the US. Explore some of the most spectacular natural wonders of this part of the world, experience unique cultures of vibrant cities, such as Santiago, Bueno Aires and Lima, and wine and dine in the decadent wineries of the continent.

While the borders are not open for all of these destinations yet, we know as Andiamo travelers you are always looking forward to your next adventure. We’ve compiled our top destinations to visit in South America in 2021.

PERU

Peru typically tops bucket lists for curious travelers looking to trek to the ancient Inca citadel of Macchu Picchu; however, the country is host to many hot-spots, such as the vibrant seaside city of Lima, the majestic waters of Lake Titicaca and the colorful Rainbow Mountains. While there are many different ways to explore this region at a variety of costs, Andiamo’s favorite itineraries always include Belmond’s Iconic Luxury Trains along the way! We recommend 6-10 nights to get the full experience of all this country has to offer.

 CHILE

While it’s hard to overshadow Patagonia’s stunning Torres del Paine National Park, Chile has so much to offer in terms of culture, art, food and most importantly, WINE. Start your journey in the city of Santiago, the country’s capital and home to some of the finest contemporary and historic art museums in South America.  There is no shortage of wineries to visit in the area, but our favorite for a day-trip from Santiago is the Maipo Valley (approximately 40-60min away). The Maipo Valley is red-wine territory and is famous for their Cabernet Sauvignons and Cab-blends.

There is so much to see in this country that stretches along the Eastern Coast of the continent’s peninsula, so for travelers who have the time to spend, we recommend heading North to the Atacama Desert before heading all the way South to Patagonia for trekking adventures.

Our top hotel picks:

The Singular prides itself on its location in the heart of artistic society in the city. Its neo-classical architecture is a nod to the cultural and historical surroundings. The hotel is a retreat within the city with a full service spa and a rooftop pool and bar with panoramic views.

The exclusive, secluded location of the Alto Lodge makes it a truly once-in-a-lifetime destination. The Salt Mountain Range and the expansive desert serves as the backdrop to your stay as you explore the beauty of your surroundings. This resort is a true desert oasis.

  • Patagonia: Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa
Woven into the landscape of the mountains and Lake Sarmiento, the Tierra Patagonia is truly one of a kind. Expect the ultimate in luxury available in this area and the perfect home base for uncovering the magic of unencumbered adventure in this untamed part of the world.

BOLIVIA

This lesser traveled country is not to be underestimated. Bolivia has a diversified varied terrain from the Andes Mountains, the Atacama Desert and the Amazon Basin Rainforest. Start in the mountainous city of La Paz and work your way south to the Uyuni Salt Flats and to pay a visit to the gorgeous Laguna Colorada. Expect breathtaking views at these otherworldly landscapes. We can guarantee it is nothing like you’ve ever seen before! Combine Bolivia with either Chile or Peru to get the most out of what this part of the world has to offer.

Our top hotel picks:

  • La Paz – Atix Hotel
This trendy boutique hotel is located in a quieter, upscale neighborhood on a residential street. Just 25min from the main city tourism sites, you will get the best of both worlds in terms of seeing all the city has to offer as well as secluded nights away from all the traffic and noise.

  • Uyuni Salt Flats - Palacio de Sal

Claiming the title of the “World’s First Salt Hotel”, the Palacio de Sal is the ideal base for exploring the salt flats in this region. The property is decorated in traditional Bolivian style with local art showcased among the halls. The Concept SPA features holistic wellness treatments inspired by the salt of the Earth and the Andean worldview.

ARGENTINA

Our favorite itinerary to discover Argentina covers the city, the country and the jungle. Arrive from the US to Buenos Aires and spend a few days roaming the historic streets and weekend ferias and sipping glasses of Malbec paired with incredible steaks. Check out a Flamenco Show or try on your dancing shoes at a private tango lesson. We recommend a 2-3 night stay in the Mendoza wine region due West of BA followed by 2-3 nights in the Northeastern jungles of Iguazu National Park.

 Our Top Hotel Picks:

Based in the exclusive Recoleta neighborhood of BA, the Four Seasons brings a European twist on the early-20th-century mansion that houses the original main building of the property. The clean-lined, modern accommodations have subtle nods to Argentinian style and colors, providing a sense of place within the well-known brand’s walls.

The first luxury lodge at the foothills of the Andes, this Relais & Chateaux property is the first of its kind in this booming wine region. The property was rated the 5th Best Hotel in South America by Travel + Leisure last year, offering unique accommodations with its high-end food and beverage offerings at your footsteps. For couples traveling together, we recommend the Vineyard Villa for a spacious indoor and outdoor accommodation located within the privacy of the vineyards.

  • Iguazu National Park – Gran Melia Iguazu Falls
The resort is located within the Iguazu National Park, which is also home to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The park has over 275 waterfalls, including the infamous Devil’s Throat as well as unique flora and fauna within the Alto Parana Atlantic Forests.
